Himalayan Geological Research (HGR) is a research initiative focused on understanding the geology, geomorphology, natural hazards, and evolving landscapes of the Himalayan region. We bring together field observations, geological investigations, remote sensing, GIS, satellite imagery, drone surveys, and geospatial analysis to document and understand geological processes across the Himalaya.
The Himalaya is a dynamic mountain system where tectonic activity, glacial processes, extreme weather, river erosion, and human development interact to produce rapidly changing landscapes and complex natural hazards. HGR aims to document these processes through field-based research and modern geospatial technologies, with particular emphasis on landslides, rockfalls, ice–rock avalanches, glacial and hydrological hazards, debris flows, floods, and associated cascading processes. Our work combines field evidence with Earth observation and geospatial analysis to reconstruct events, measure their spatial and temporal extent, investigate their mechanisms, and assess their downstream impacts. We also focus on developing accessible datasets, maps, visualizations, and scientific documentation that can support research, education, hazard assessment, and informed decision-making.
